Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is intended for construction locations, where supplies have to be transported around on unpaved surfaces. The proper and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is really important to be able to ensure the wellbeing of both the driver and other workers at the work site.
Terrain
Even if these trucks are built for rough terrain, you still must be very careful so as to prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and should just be operated on level ground when lifting.
Speed
Even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed restrictions, forklift operators should drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on terrain which is uneven or rough requires even more caution. Steering, particularly, could be risky at higher speeds.
Incline
Keep the load on the uphill side of the machine when operating on an incline. The rule of thumb is drive up, and back down. Never try to lift a load if operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the machine to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Make sure that the overhead guard is securely in position. Depending on the working environment, eye and hearing protection might need to be worn. Make sure that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
Weather could affect forklift operating conditions. Load handling, speed and turning may need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in rain, snow or ice.
