Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the large refueling tank has to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety aspect, it is vital that "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed in the area. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a secure enclosure that can only be accessible by authorized employees. It is important for the safety of the operator, as well as everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This task could utilize retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also important to have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Furthermore, anyone who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also must be trained to use the fire extinguisher effectively and safely. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a forklift must be correctly trained. This training includes a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. As soon as the training sessions have been completed, the individual must be tested in order to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the proper way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
There must be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located within the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are used on site. This would also include the acid in the lift truck battery, along with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all employees at all times. Like for example, if an exposure incident occurs, the person needs to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is needed, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not sure if medical care is needed, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a physician if you really believe it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
