A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machinery which is somewhat similar to a forklift. It enables the driver to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Typically, order pickers are powered by electricity. These type of equipment are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for moving pallets and doing certain jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which normally sits quite near the ground. The operator is able to direct the equipment to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be lifted up to the required level that makes it very convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, several businesses might have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers can be used to finish these particular tasks at some companies instead.
